Sunset Beach State Recreation Site

Park History

Purchased by OPRD for $700,000 from Clatsop County to serve as the western end of the Fort-to-Sea Trail between the Pacific Ocean and Fort Clatsop National Memorial. The trailheads and trail were built for the Lewis and Clark Bicentennial event commemorating the arrival of the Corps of Discovery. A portion of development costs financed by $90,000 National Park Service Challenge Costshare Program grant, matched by donated services from W&H Pacific, David Evans and Associates and Oregon National Guard. OPRD and Oregon Department of Transportation partnered with the National Park Service, the Oregon National Guard and Clatsop County. Major private sector contributors include Weyerhaeuser Co.; W&H Pacific; David Evans and Associates; OBEC Consulting Engineers; KPFF Consulting Engineers; Geotechnical Resources, Inc.; Parametrics; Vigil Sgrimis, Inc.; Spencer B. Gross, Inc., Walker Macy and Conkling Fiskum & McCormick, Inc.
