Rose Garden Caretaker

State Capitol State Park

Needed From February 17, 2020
Needed To September 1, 2020

Since 2008, Oregon State Parks has managed the grounds surrounding Oregon's capitol building. Among the park's most impressive features is the Capitol Park Rose Garden and its selection of beautiful, fragrant roses, located near Center Street north of the Sprague Fountain.

Oregon State Parks is currently looking for volunteers interested in caring for and maintaining this garden to prepare for spring and summer growth, and will be accepting applications from interested volunteers through September 1st to schedule work for the spring and summer of 2020.

Specific tasks can vary slightly by season, but could include removing excess growth in the spring to open the interior of each rose to prepare for spring growth, "deadheading" or removing old blooms during the summer months, and general landscape maintenance of the planter beds. Work is typically done with hand tools provided by the park. Orientation and training is provided by park staff and will cover the specific tasks needed, proper techniques, and workplace safety.

Interested volunteers should be willing to schedule work in the Rose Garden on days between Saturday and Wednesday and between 8:00 AM and 2:30 PM. Scheduling is subject to availability of park staff for training and supervision.

If you enjoy gardening, working outdoors, and would like the opportunity to help care for this cherished feature of one of Oregon's most unique state parks, please contact Ranger Jarod Armenta to find out more about this exciting opportunity.
