Did the weather entice a record 1,182 hikers to this year’s First Day Hikes? Beautiful, sunny skies—warm on the coast, a bit nippier east and mixed with fog— welcomed hikers.
Elijah Bristow State Park Ranger Sean Stewart didn’t have time for a weather check. At least 60 horseback riders joined Stewart and his Kiger mustang Nocha for the event. Stewart said the equestrian parking lot was filled with trucks and horse trailers. The Collier Memorial State Park hike split into two groups to accommodate 81 hikers. One group took the 2.5-hile trek at a brisk pace with no stops, while the other group strolled at a leisurely pace and stopped for interpretive talks.
Champoeg State Heritage Site held two hikes, and it was a good thing because 100 people were up early for the morning hike and 150 late sleepers joined the afternoon hike. “That is THE record to date,” said Interpretive Park Ranger Daniel Klug.
