This 1 mile hike will offer expansive views of the mouth of the Columbia River and the Pacific Ocean. Weather permitting, it is easy to spot Tillamook Head jutting out into the ocean well over 15 miles south of the park. The view to the north, across the Columbia River, includes Cape Disappointment and the small fishing village of Illwaco, WA. Shorebird sightings could include varieties of gulls, pipers, sanderlings, and more. The occasional sighting of a Bald Eagle, Snowy Owl, or Harrier Hawk preying about are also possible. Roosevelt Elk are often spotted along the east side of the Clastop Spit around Trestle Bay. Little known to the general visitor is that the U.S. Army once occupied an area of Clastop Spit during World War 2. Not to mention the remnants of the train trestle that engineers once used to construct the impressive South Jetty of the Columbia River. Points of interest regarding this history will be covered on the hike. The hike will proceed regardless of rain, snow, wind, or cold. No reservations needed, just show up at the scheduled start time and place to participate. Dress for the expected weather and anticipate wind gusts and temperatures that will be cold. A majority of the hike will be in areas of the park that are highly exposed to these conditions. Dogs on leash only; hike includes unimproved trails over dunes and across open beach areas, strollers strongly advised against.
